Why does your face cream need an SPF?

Do you need to use a face cream that has SPF blended into it? What are the benefits of using such products? Let us find answers to these questions in the following sections.

Why use a face cream that has SPF?

It is a fact that if we are exposed to UVA and UVB rays then it greatly increases skin cancer risk. Apart from that, there are other side effects of exposure to these harmful rays. For instance, sun rays related skin damage can result in skin laxity, dark spots, improper skin tone, rough texture, and similar other problems.

Moreover, UV rays are known to harm the DNA and when the UVA rays enter the dermis (which is skin's 2nd layer under the epidermis), they damage elastin and collagen.

Face Creams with SPF

There are two types of sun rays that we need to protect our face from and those are UVB and UVA. UVAs are responsible for appearance of signs of aging while UVBs result in sunburns. By using a face cream that has SPF you will be able to protect your skin from sun damage. The moisturizer or sunscreen you use should have 15 or higher value SPF and the sunscreen should be broad spectrum.

The good thing about moisturizers that contain SPF is that they combine SPF and hydrating steps of your skin care routine. Apart from protection you receive from harmful UV rays, these face creams and moisturizers provide you hydrated and supple skin. Let us look at some other reasons to use SPF based face cream.

Reason #1

Sun damage shows its negative effects overtime when SPF is used sparingly. On the other hand, when SPF becomes a part of your everyday skin care routine, you experience positive results without much effort.

Reason #2

Maintaining appropriate elastin and collagen levels is important if you want to prevent wrinkles and fine lines. A good quality face cream or moisturizer provide required hydration, anti-oxidants, and SPF protection. Proper hydration ensures your skin remains healthy and is able to protect skin's deeper layers such as those with elastin and collagen.

Similarly, anti-oxidants present in sunscreen create a protective layer and defend your skin from harmful effects of free radicals and UV rays. Moreover, SPF protects your skin from UV rays that are responsible for sun spots or dark spots. Thus, if your face cream has anti-oxidants and SPF then you get complete protection from harmful effects of sun rays.

Reason #3

Most people face issues when they use a SPF and moisturizer separately. These issues include greasy feeling or pilling. Pilling is a problem that occurs when a cream or moisturizer begins to ball up after application. Such problem occurs when the skin is not able to fully absorb the product.

Moreover, when moisturizer is applied with a sunscreen on top of it, you start feeling greasy or heavy since many of the sunscreens have beeswax and other occlusives, which form a moisture blanket over the skin. When a face cream has SPF blended into it, you do not have to face these issues.
